ASTROLOGY IN THE WESTERN ESOTERIC TRADITION

Ever since the advent of Sun sign astrology and newspaper horoscopes in the early 20th century, the nuanced complexity of this ancient art has become somewhat obscured. Through this error, the entirety of mankind has been sorted into twelve discreet zodiacal personality types. This unfortunate, and comparatively recent, development does not reflect the ancient doctrines upon which astrology is based.
In this presentation, we will endeavor to reestablish Western Astrology as a foundational esoteric tradition; we will accomplish this by addressing the underlying philosophy, history and magical applications of the art while exploring its theory and practice. We will also illustrate astrology’s central position among the other Hermetic Arts, alchemy and theurgy.
This presentation, being introductory, is appropriate for all levels and no existing knowledge of astrology is needed.

ASTROLOGICAL SYMBOLISM IN FREEMASONRY

Throughout the ritual and symbolism of Freemasonry – in the Blue Lodge as well as in the Craft’s appendant bodies – allusions to astrology abound. We find their presence in our lectures; in old tracing boards; in our degree rituals; in the founding of the United Grand Lodge of England; even in the Craft’s central allegory – the Hiramic Legend – in which the Master Mason degree culminates.
In this presentation, we will highlight the presence of astrological symbolism in Freemasonry. We will also show how the timing of the founding of the UGLE was almost certainly an astrological election (the most auspicious time to set a cycle in motion), due to the placement of the planets in signs and houses, as well as the geometrical aspects made by them on the ecliptic.
This presentation is open to Master Masons only and no existing knowledge of astrology is needed.
Biography:
Jaime Paul Lamb is the author of MYTH, MAGICK & MASONRY: Occult Perspectives in Freemasonry (2018), APPROACHING THE MIDDLE CHAMBER: The Seven Liberal Arts in Freemasonry and the Western Esoteric Tradition (2020) and THE ARCHETYPAL TEMPLE and Other Writings on Masonic Esotericism (2021). He is the Worshipful Master of Ascension Lodge no. 89, F.&A.M., in Phoenix, AZ and is a Frater of both the Arizona College of the Societas Rosicruciana in Civitatibus Foederatis and the Hermetic Society of the G ∴ D ∴. Lamb is a member of the American Federation of Astrologers (AFA) and is certified in Hellenistic Astrology through Chris Brennan’s premier course on the subject.
